[T.S.R:10881] Defence biz propel Indian shipyard industry

·         Pipavav Shipyard is India's largest dockyard - 660 mtrs x 65 mtrs
·         Seeing is believing! At any given time, you can seek work on at least 6 to seven  vessels in progress - the operations are huge, huge to say the least.
Right now operation on four Panamax size vessels is in rapid progress.
·         Pipavav Shipyard has already bagged orders for 22 Panamax bulk carriers of 74,500 DWT each along with options to construct additional Panamax vessels and delivery will begin from April 2010 onwards.
·         It has also bagged an odrer for 12 OSVs from ONGC.
·         The Indian Navy has shown interest in the facility and in fact have technically qualified them to bid for building war ships.
  • Pipavav Shipyard has already submitted bids for seven navan vessels.
    ·         Defence is a big business now with the Navy deciding to add 100 ships to its fleet.
    ·         In fact, Min of Defence is takihg over HIndustan Shipyard at Vizag to for its exclusive needs. pl check the Reuters story below
    ·         The 3 PSU shipyards are already working to their capacity - their hands are full.
    ·         Govt looking for private participation - huge scope for shipyards like Pipavav.
    ·         Pipavav Shipyard is promoted by SKIL and Punj Lloyd.
    ·         Pipavav Shipyard also intend to focus on building ships for the military and the government, initially focusing on vessels for the Indian navy and coast guard and to repair a wide range of vessels, including VLCCs and OSVs, as well as naval, coast guard and other specialty vessels such as LNG carriers.
    ·         The construction of the Pipavav Shipyard is substantially complete. The installation of two Goliath cranes, each capable of lifting up to 600 tonnes, is currently underway and the construction of the Pipavav Shipyard (other than the offshore yard) is expected to be completed by October 2009.
    ·         The offshore yard, which is currently being developed to cater to business opportunities in the fabrication and construction of Offshore Business Products, is expected to be ready for full utilisation by the end of March 2010.
    ·         Based on information on other shipyards' websites as to their actual capacity and their capacity under construction and assuming no further increases in such capacity, we believe that, upon completion, Pipavav Shipyard will have the largest dockyard in India, with a capacity to build and repair ships of up to 400,000 DWT, together with facilities for fabrication / assembly of products for the offshore sector.
